Kate, as their assistant, wields a whistle and a tight schedule, and she catches the eye of one of the students, Paul, who takes an immediate shine to her.

The school does not get off to a great start as Stevie, eager to prove herself, shows her skills are in demonstrating, not explaining, her lack of formal training proving a hindrance when she shows the students how to ride a mechanical bull, but has no idea how to break it down into steps.

It is only when he gives her a completely inappropriate hug that Kate starts to wonder about his motives. Jodi tells Kate just to enjoy flirting but Kate doesn't want to encourage Paul and she tells him she just wants to be friends. To her relief, he tells her that's all he wants too but his continued advances force Kate to bring his behavious out into the open.

Meanwhile Stevie continues to make life hell for the rodeo students, expecting them to be naturals, the way she was. She takes their failures as a personal insult and as a result gets tougher and tougher on them. Alex tries to get her to go easy, but she tells him no one went easy on her, this is the only way they'll learn. Stevie is in love with Kane. She's happy for herself and for Tess who has announced her betrothal to Nick. Her happiness is short-lived however when she spots an all-too-familiar face from her past. Vin Riley has come looking for her and, more specifically, for the opals he believes are rightfully his.

Stevie knows Vin could be dangerous. The only way to get away from him, and keep him from making good on his threats to hurt her friends is to make a deal — and move on. In a way it's perfect timing. With Tess and Nick engaged, and talk about Drovers and Killarney merging into one big Ryan empire, Stevie feels the time is right for a break. Stevie is sad to be leaving, she's put down roots, made friends, feels like she belongs, but she believes she has no real claim, no financial or emotional stake in Drovers.

Stevie susses out Kane. How would he like to spend time with her, maybe set themselves up somewhere else? Kane also has been thinking of debunking. Nick is constantly on his back, the lease is shaky, and there have been too many close calls with the neighbours. He has also realised he has genuine feelings for Stevie. And so he agrees. When Stevie shows him the opals — seed money for the future — their future together looks certain.

The other women are stunned at Stevie's sudden decision to leave. Stevie hasn't told them about Vin, so they can't help feeling hurt as she has chosen a life with Kane so quickly.

Meanwhile everyone is busy trying to track down some feral pigs that are wreaking havoc on Drovers and Wilgul. With help from the Ryans they capture a pig and fit it with a tracking device. It's the 'Judas' pig, so named because it will eventually infiltrate the rest of the pigs, giving away their position and enabling our gang to hunt them down.

Stevie visits Kane, only to discover his 'chop shop'. Her faith in him is put to the test and she decides to meet the opal buyer on her own. But after the money changes hands she's ambushed by Vin who takes the money and escapes in his ute. With Kane's help, Stevie manages to track down Vin and recover the money. Kane warns Vin off once and for all, and we see his dark side.

All looks well. However, in tracking down the 'Judas' pig, Alex finds dumped car parts on Wilgul and confronts Kane — he knows what he's up to.

While Tess and Nick work to set up a pump in the dam, talking wedding plans, Tess loses her engagement ring. Nick dives underwater to retrieve it, but he's under for such a long time that Tess begins to panic, thinking that he's drowned. She's relieved when Nick eventually resurfaces with the ring, but the fright stays with her for days.

Feeling that she's been given an omen, Tess becomes increasingly afraid, for Nick, for Charlotte, even for the safety of the pregnant ewes, which she insists be brought in to the house paddock for lambing. Her anxiety grows when, as a part of a CFS recruitment drive being held out at Drovers, Nick takes on the role of a road accident victim. Tess, seeing Nick apparently unconscious, hyperventilates and faints. On recovering Tess protests that she's fine. However, she eventually comes to see the reason for her fear: experience has taught her that she loses all the people she loves. Now that she has committed to Nick, she is scared that if she actually says the words, she will lose him, too. When Tess faints a second time during the lambing, Nick calls the Doctor, who diagnoses panic attacks. This diagnosis convinces Tess that "all she has to fear is fear itself", a conviction that's put to the test when, throwing herself back into work, Tess herself nearly drowns.

Stevie, now part owner of Drovers, proposes a couple of new, money making schemes; a simple cattle agistment, and another, more long term plan, for the establishment of a jillaroo school. Due to her fear that any change will bring disaster, her need to control her environment, Tess is uncharacteristically conservative. Stevie thinks Tess is pulling rank, letting her know she is only a small cog in the big wheel that is Drovers. Stevie is also hurting as a result of Kane's sudden disappearance, and is furious when Alex lets slip that it was he who warned Kane off.

Kate steals her courage to talk to Dave but muddles things up to the point where he ends up setting her up with Craig.

When the Gungellan CFS is called out to a fire at local farmer Barry Davies' place, Nick lets Jodi take control. Despite feeling a twinge of jealousy at the rapport between Luke and Ainsley, Jodi handles the situation well. She and Nick discover the fire was deliberately lit. When Barry is questioned he says he remembers seeing a young man running away from the house after the fire.

Later that day, a second fire breaks out by the roadside and Nick and Jodi are concerned that there's a serial arsonist in the district. Suspicion falls on Luke, who fails to respond to this second fire and is unable to account for the long periods he is absent from the truck stop. However, Jodi is determined to prove Luke innocent and her investigations reveal that Barry lit the house fire deliberately to claim the insurance. It seems for a moment that they've found their arsonist, but when Barry's alibi holds for the second fire, suspicion falls on Luke once more.

Meanwhile, sparks fail to fly between Tess and Nick when they complete their pre-marriage compatibility test and achieve a maximum score of 100%. Tess is concerned that at this level there's no room for them to grow. She's convinced that a good fight is essential to keep the passion alive in any relationship. Alex vainly tries to teach Nick the art of arguing with one's partner.

Stevie is having her own relationship dilemma. After being asked to be Tess's matron of honour (a title which she changes to "Best Woman") she is obliged to work with best man Alex at the wedding rehearsals. She's still furious with him for telling Kane to leave her alone. Their conflict comes to a head during the rehearsals when Stevie doctors a wedding reading to berate Alex about minding his own business.

After an earth tremor, the cattle are skittish and the bore has dried up on Drovers Run. Tess is going to deal with that while Stevie, performing matron of honour duties, is going to spend the day with Alex on wedding chores, including picking up Tess's grandmother's veil, while Tess is going to stay behind and fix the windmill. Stevie is very proud about being asked, and is taking her Best Woman duties very seriously. She heads off with Alex, but after a few moments they start to bicker about the nature of male/female friendships, with Alex maintaining they're not worth the bother and are impossible to maintain, and Stevie maintaining the opposite. Alex feels she's still upset about his interference re Kane, but Stevie assures him that's not the case, pretending to Alex that he meant nothing to her. Their bickering remains relatively low key until, on the way back home, a small earth tremor hits setting off a chain of events. Alex's ute has a flat tyre, and worse, Tess's veil blows into a creek where it gets torn and muddied. While they wait for a tow-truck, both admit to feelings of hurt over lost loves and finding comfort in each other's arms, they kiss. It could easily lead to more, but both pull away, embarrassed and confused by the moment.

At home Tess is worrying about doing the right thing superstition wise, reading the earth tremor as a 'sign'. Nick comes over, unexpectedly, to help her fix the windmill, and when she needs help getting down, and when they end in each others arms, Tess worries that she's not doing things right. In the interests of harmony and good omens, Tess decides to invite Sandra to the hen's night, something that makes Sandra suspicious, although, after talking to Nick, she eventually accepts, turning up late.

One day to go to the wedding of the millennium at Drovers Run. The wedding preparations are a beautiful thing. But the imminent arrival of Nick's mother, Liz, strikes a discordant note. Nick is happy to see his mother and Tess is happy to play along, but for all her protestations of joy, Liz still has a few bombshells to deliver along with the giftwrapped knives. There are other intruders as well. A fire ant infestation threatens to derail the wedding completely.

Liz comes with lots of baggage. She's been talking to Nick, but has barely spoken to Alex since the truth of his parentage came out. Her relationship with Tess has never been happy, and she has come between Nick and Tess more than once. So many are tense, (though Tess is trying to be relaxed about it) waiting to discover if Liz is here as doting mum, or is here with a plan. Things are tense at Killarney too. Sandra feels deeply threatened by Liz's appearance on the scene and her instant apparent rapor with Harry.

Tess' friend Kirsty arrives to help with the wedding catering, and Meg is also back in town, ready for the celebrations. All is going smoothly, until Liz draws Tess aside and plays her hand at last. She can offer Tess her own restaurant in the city, so she can begin her career anew. Tess gets the idea — give up Nick and she'll get the money. Liz protests that isn't what she meant at all — Nick will surely follow Tess if they love each other truly. But both know the truth — Nick would never leave the land. Even for Tess and a restaurant.

Ghosts of the past are awakened when Jasmine McLeod arrives in the district with the intention of scattering her father's ashes on Drovers Run.

Hugh McLeod, Jasmine's father, was the younger brother of Jack. A feisty, adventurous spirit, Hugh was in love with and had intended to marry his childhood sweetheart, Prue, upon her return from Britain. But all that changed when Jack and Prue realised they'd fallen in love with each other. When Hugh discovered their secret, he turned his back on both the farm and his brother and took off for the war in Vietnam, never to see either again.

And so Jasmine arrives, having only recently learnt of her father's time on the land and the existence of her uncle Jack. Jasmine is even surprised to find relatives still living on the property, so sketchy was her knowledge of the subject. Tess is equally in the dark as to what caused the family rift and so together they embark on a journey of discovery.

Tess is thrown when Nick asks her to update her will. She gives in, but she's worried the contents may shock him. Meanwhile, Luke gets a rather permanent expression of his love for Jodi — a tattoo! Jodi then makes her way to the tattoo parlour to do the same. But is she really willing to go through with it?

She may still be haunted by the death of her fiancé, Mark, who was killed in a riding accident at an equestrian event where Jaz was competing, but Jaz makes an immediate impression on Alex. Despite Kane's attempts to get 'straight' work, Stevie's suspicions are aroused when she witnesses him talking to Ray, his old car contact. She tries to help, asking Nick and Alex if there's any work going on Killarney. Later at an awkward dinner, Nick and Kane clash, and Nick inadvertently lets slip Stevie's earlier request. Kane's pride is injured, he would never ask or accept charity from Nick or his woman — he's an old-fashioned guy afterall — and drives off leaving Stevie feeling awful.

Later that night, Tess finds Sally in nesting phase rearranging kitchen cupboards. When Sally sees Tess and Nick's wedding photos the veneer cracks and she confesses to still being in love with Nick.

Meanwhile Kane is playing cards with Terry and Luke at the truckstop when Alex turns up offering some work driving a truck.
